Winter Survival Guide: Protecting Your Car from Road Salt

Car Covered in Winter Salt and Grime

In Ireland, winter isn't just a season—it's a chemical assault on your car's exterior.

As soon as the temperature drops, the salt gritters hit the roads. While essential for safety, road salt (sodium chloride) is a highly corrosive substance that accelerates rust and destroys paint clarity. At Carhub Detailing, we specialize in "Winter Prep" details that create an impenetrable barrier between your car and the harsh elements.

The Science of Salt Corrosion

Salt is a catalyst for oxidation. When salt is mixed with water (slush), it creates an electrolyte solution that speeds up the rusting process of any exposed metal. It doesn't just affect the paint; it attacks your brake lines, suspension components, and chassis bolts.

Worse yet, the grit spread on roads contains small stones that act like mini-projectiles, causing "micro-chips" in your clear coat which then allow salt to get *under* the paint, leading to bubbling and peeling.

Protection Strategy #1: The Barrier

The most effective way to survive a Cork winter is to ensure the salt never actually touches your paint.

Ceramic Shield

A Ceramic or Graphene coating is nearly immune to salt corrosion. It prevents the salt from bonding to the surface, making it slide off during a simple rinse.

Wheel-Off Protection

We remove your wheels to deep-clean and coat the inner barrels and brake calipers—the areas most vulnerable to winter grime and salt buildup.

The Carhub Detailing Winter Prep Checklist

  • Chemical Decontamination: Removal of all iron and tar buildup before protection.
  • Paint Sealant/Coating: Application of a high-durability winter sealant.
  • Glass Sealant: Improves visibility during heavy rain and prevents ice from bonding.
  • Door Seal Lubrication: Prevents rubber seals from freezing shut and tearing.
  • Chassis Rinse: High-pressure underbody flush to remove trapped salt.

Winter Maintenance Tip

During the winter, try to rinse your car at least once a week—even if you don't do a full wash. Simply pressure-washing the wheel arches and underbody will significantly reduce the amount of time salt has to sit on the metal.

Don't let the salt win.
